Also known as a quarrel in medieval warfare, a crossbow missile. The early medieval bolt was often made of ash or yew, about 3m/1ft long with a tapered and flattened butt. It was lightweight, perhaps less than 84g/3oz. The head, or pile, of the bolt was usually four-sided and pyramidal, and made of metal. It was similar to an arrow and had a flight, commonly made of goose wing feathers.
One type of bolt, known as a ‘vireton’, was made with a spiral flight so it would rotate in flight, improving its accuracy.
